J Dilla: Story Behind The Beats

The story behind some of J Dilla’s greatest productions. Interviews with Common, Kweli, Ma Dukes, Badu, Phat Kat and others by Egon, Eric Ducker and Edwin Houghton, originally published by Fader, 2006.

Think twice, youngbloods, precocious hoodrats, beatbox prodigies. Somewhere in the fine print of the job description for “Revolutionary Black Genius” is a clause that reads, “Must die young.” Producer and rapper J Dilla departure from terra firma earlier this year at the age of 32 is proof that there’s no escaping the curse, and his killer-Lupus-related blood disease-is enough to make you believe in conspiracy theories of cosmic proportions. If you make music, it’s almost enough to make you want to give it up altogether, except Dilla was so damn good at what he did, he probably made you want to give up even when he was still living. The discography of J Dilla (born James Yancey) is brief in time, but prolific in output and wide in scope. Since he passed, there’s been a flood of testimonials to his brilliance and his untouchable status as your favorite producers favorite producer, but if those eulogies have enshrined Dilla as a minor deity to beat makers and 12-inch connoisseurs, then no doubt he’s the type of god who is properly worshipped with drums, not hymns of praise. So take these firsthand accounts from the various divas, rappers, soul cats and family members whose collective minds he blew when making music not as props for props sake, but as story problems for your MPC, object lessons in how to do it right …. And get back to work.

Hit the jump for the records.

Common Remembers Dilla

Common shares his memories of James Dewitt Yancey aka J Dilla aka Jay Dee. Common tells Nick Huff of Hard Knock TV that J Dilla is his, Pharrells, Kanyes and Questloves favorite producer. Common also talks about how Dilla and himself worked on Like Water For Chocolate almost 10 years ago and how he thinks Music would be different if Jay Dee was still alive.

“I never seen a producer sit there and have so much revere for music and so much respect for it. I’ve seen everybody from Pharrell to Kanye, to Questlove … and I’m like, ‘Man, that’s my favorite producer.’ I think music would be in a different place if he was here. He provided so much inspiration.”

“He made sounds that would be anything from the rawest of hip-hop to something like sounds flowing against Radiohead, and he would play some of the instruments.”

Statik Selektah x Q-Tip: The Look of Love [Dilla Tribute]

statik-slektah-dilla-dedication.jpg

I was going through my externals and came across a bunch of old Dilla tribute mixes and beat tapes. I’ll be posting ‘em through out the day, but I’ll leave out the beat tapes. I’ll letcha’ have the fun of scavenging around for all 3 of ‘em. There’s a couple more, but most of them have repeats.

The here’s a fine collection of Dilla’s work, accompanied by his close friends x fans. Static Slektah and Q-Tip pulled together joints from Common, De La Soul, Termanology, Erykah Badu, Hi-Tek and many more. Peep the tracklist and download link after the jump.

Common feat Pharrell – Universal Mind Control

Everyone needs to be bumping this in their car. I’ll admit, it took me a few listens for me to get used to this, but it worked. I couldn’t tell you one hook by P that sucked. Dude is a genius and Common might be able to pull it off without Ye. I’m still lost in Finding Forever.
